Pope Francis has died

Today, on Monday morning, April 21, Easter Monday, Cardinal Kevin Farrell announced with deep sorrow the death of Pope Francis with these words:


"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church.

President Donald Trump ordered flags to be flown at half-staff as a “mark of respect for the memory” for Pope Francis, who passed on Monday.


The order applies to “all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, on the day of interment,” Trump wrote in the proclamation.

The world is mourning the loss of Pope Francis, who died on Monday morning, one day after he made an appearance from the balcony of St. Peter's basilica to address the crowd on Easter Sunday.


The death of the head of the Catholic Church comes after a series of worsening health problems, including a respiratory crisis that left him in critical condition in recent months.

Pope Francis appeared at noon local time in his wheelchair and blessed the crowd. After declaring "Buona Pasqua!" (Happy Easter!), he indicated someone would read his message for him.

The Church After Francis

I have personal memories of Pope Francis that I greatly value: a friendly and generous working relationship at the 1997 Synod on America when we were both newly appointed archbishops; his personal welcome and warmth at Rome’s 2014 Humanum conference; and the extraordinary success of his 2015 visit to Philadelphia for the Eighth World Meeting of Families. He devoted himself to serving the Church and her people in ways that he felt the times demanded. As a brother in the faith, and a successor of Peter, he deserves our ongoing prayers for his eternal life in the presence of the God he loved.


Having said that, an interregnum between papacies is a time for candor. The lack of it, given today’s challenges, is too expensive. ...
