Fixing Biden's Border Blunders

The nation needs "President Trump Round 2" to save the country from being overrun by illegal immigrants and democracy being demolished. That's the assessment of Ohio's junior senator, JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is spelling out the only solution to the multifarious problems caused by Biden’s wide-open border is a Trump victory in November.

Vance delivered some memorable one-two punches when he was interviewed by Fox Business News on Sunday. When host Maria Bartiromo asked how Republicans could “move the needle” toward solving the US border crisis, he responded with no hesitation.

"This illustrates the need for a President Trump Round 2.”

But he didn't spare fellow Republicans in his analysis saying he's “not letting the congressional Republicans off the hook because we have a lot of leverage. We just have to be willing to use it.”

The Buckeye-born-and-bred, Harvard-educated senator didn’t let Speaker of the House Mike Johnson off the hook either. While he acknowledged that “Johnson is a good guy,” he made clear what actions the Speaker needs to make to secure the trust of American voters:

“[I]f he brings up a foreign aid package sending billions of dollars to Ukraine without doing anything on the southern border, it will be a disgrace and a massive betrayal to not only Republican voters but to the entire country …

So, I hope Speaker Johnson really shows some steely resolve here, pushes back the craziness, and shows the Biden administration you don’t get a dime for your foreign priorities until you do your job and secure the border.”

Economic challenges

Vance also ripped into Biden's bragging about the economy in Friday’s March Jobs report.

Beginning with a dig at Trump, Biden declared, "Today’s report marks a milestone in America’s comeback. Three years ago, I inherited an economy on the brink."

"With today’s report of 303,000 new jobs in March, we have passed the milestone of 15 million jobs created since I took office. That’s 15 million more people who have the dignity and respect that comes with a paycheck," Biden crowed.

Vance countered the president's rosy picture, saying, "Much of the job growth over the last 3 to 4 years has gone to the foreign-born, many of those, of course, illegal immigrants."

He contrasted Biden's economy with Trump's.

[T]he Trump economy, Vance said, "was about productivity enhancements, higher wages for American workers, more manufacturing and ultimately good, better-paying jobs for American workers."

In the Biden economy, he said, "Americans struggle to feed their families, struggle to buy a home, struggle to live the American dream. It's a really sad, sad state of affairs."

The American people are "not buying" the rosy picture Biden is presenting, the Ohio Republican concluded.

"What a disgraceful commentary for a president to brag about an economy that is benefitting illegal immigrants more than American citizens," he added.

Safety concerns

When he talks one-to-one with Ohioans, the senator said they express worry about increased crime resulting from Biden's open borders, in addition to not being able to afford a good life.

Illegal immigration is a problem making them feel less safe in their own communities, he underscored. He relayed the recent case of an Ohio man murdered in Hamilton — a city with a population of about 60,000 — by an illegal immigrant.

"When people say Ohio is not a border state, we're certainly dealing with the problems caused by Joe Biden's open border. This has got to stop," the senator emphasized. "Unless you stop it, I don't think you're going to give people any sense of safety in their own communities."

The Heritage Foundation, an American think-tank, has been collecting data on the number of crimes committed by illegal immigrants.

It reports that the "true extent of crimes committed by illegal aliens" is difficult to assess. It gives two reasons: the Biden administration failure to provide continuous updates on illegal alien crime data, and over 1.5 million immigrants being unaccounted for (“gotaways”) since Biden’s term began in 2021.

Nonetheless, according to Heritage, it calculates that in 2023, border patrol agents have encountered thousands of illegal immigrants "with prior criminal convictions, including assault, rape, and murder."

It also cites a 2021 DOJ document that reports 64% of federal arrests in 2018 involving noncitizens, despite their comprising only 7% of the population overall at that time.

Political advantage

Numerous sources have reported that more than 10 million people have illegally entered the US since Biden took office, the greatest number in the nation's history and of any administration.

Vance is sounding the alarm about how millions of illegal immigrants, or "newcomers" as Biden calls them, are being used by the Democrats to gain additional congressional seats.

He points to California which has gained "3 to 5 congressional seats they shouldn’t have." The reason is "[t]he census counts illegal aliens when it hands out congressional representatives," he said.

"[W]hen you import millions of people into this country illegally, you are actually destroying the American people’s power and their own democracy. You are taking away congressional representation from American citizens and giving it to illegal aliens,” he continued.

Closure

The senator underscored that in the months and weeks leading up to November, "we have to do everything we can to re-elect Donald Trump because if we had him, we wouldn’t be dealing with a president who wants an open border."
